PLC calls on government to prosecute striking teachers

GAZA, (PIC)– The committee on education and social affairs in the PLC called on the caretaker government in Gaza to take legal action against all those who participated in the education sector strike and refrained from reporting to their jobs.

The committee told a press conference that the strike called for by the union of teachers in Ramallah is politicized and not a professional walkout, warning of the negative impact of this strike on the educational process and the psychological status of students, parents and society.

It said that what proves that this strike is politicized is that it was not staged in a series of progressive actions which start with escalation and then a partial strike, pointing out that it is known that vocational strikes are organized inside the workplace.

The committee underlined that the transfer of teachers and principals was carried out without discrimination, noting that the education ministry has the right to take such decisions.

It added that if there was action taken in violation of law, it must be discussed through legal channels and arguments and not through striking and sabotaging the educational process.

The committee charged that the union of teachers in Ramallah became a “cheap tool” in the hand of the PA and it is no longer an independent union because if it had been sincere in carrying the concerns of teachers, it would have intervened to stop the arbitrary decision taken by the PA to cut the salaries of West Bank teachers and principals who are affiliated with or supporters of Hamas.

For his part, Dr. Mohamed Askool, the minister of education, stated that replacement teachers would assume Monday morning their duties in all Gaza schools which suffered from the absence of some teachers from their educational responsibilities.

Dr. Askool pointed out that the substitute teachers are graduates who applied for jobs at the general recruitment office of the caretaker government.

The education minister warned Sunday morning the absent teachers and principals that they would be replaced if they did not report to their jobs on Monday.
